As NEC says, there are no drivers required for Windows® XP (Home, Professional), and Windows 2000, and Windows ME. It aint necessary to install a driver or program for preference setup. On the other hand DVD and CD writing software must be purchased seperately. Here's what NEC says about certain software such as illegal firmware copies. Optical drives are high-precision products. Usage environment and dispersion of parts characteristics will dramatically change performance. To absorb these dispersions and maintain the best performance, unique parameters are set up on every drive at each stage of production. The use of illegal F/W copies may change these parameters. In such case, writing and reading performance could deteriorate, even though your drive works normally. We at NEC strongly urge you not to use such illegal copies. NEC gives directions for updating firmware on your DVD/RW Drive, and also indicates that firmware updates for NEC DVD drives will usually only add new media information and will not solve issues in conjunction with some software packages.
